What to Bring to the Gym: Your Kit Bag Checklist
Knowing what to bring to the gym saves you from the small annoyances that can derail a session: no water halfway through, sweaty hands on a grip, or forgetting what weight you used last week. A well-packed bag takes five minutes to sort once and then lives by the door. Here is a straightforward checklist, built around training on a floor of classic Olymp machines like ours in Archway, N19.
## The core checklist: what to bring to the gym every time
These are the items worth packing for every single session.
### 1. A water bottle
Fill it before you leave home. Sipping between sets keeps you comfortable, particularly on longer sessions or warm days. A bottle that holds around 500ml to 750ml is easy to carry and usually enough for a typical workout. For more on fluids, see our piece on hydration for training.
### 2. A small towel
A towel is basic gym manners. Lay it on benches and seat pads, wipe your hands between sets and wipe down the equipment when you finish. A compact gym towel folds into almost nothing.
### 3. A notebook or a training app
This is the item most beginners forget and the one that makes the biggest difference over time. Write down each exercise, the weight and the reps. Next session, you know exactly what to beat. A pocket notebook and a pen works perfectly; so does a notes app or a dedicated workout app on your phone. Pick whichever you will actually use.
### 4. Your phone and headphones
Useful for music, a timer for rest periods and your training log if you keep it digitally. Wired or wireless, it does not matter, as long as they are charged.
### 5. A padlock, just in case
Many people keep a small padlock in their bag as a habit, so it is there whenever they need to secure belongings wherever they train or travel. It weighs nothing and saves you leaving valuables lying around. If you are unsure what storage is available on your first visit, ask the team when they call to confirm your trial.
### 6. A snack
If you are training straight after work or before lunch, a small snack in the bag stops you running on empty. A banana, a handful of nuts, a yoghurt pot or a cereal bar are all easy options. Keep something for after the session too, especially if you have a journey home.
## Optional extras
Not everyone needs these, but they are worth considering:
- **Spare socks and a T-shirt** if you are going on somewhere afterwards.
- **Deodorant and wet wipes** for a quick freshen up.
- **A hoodie** for the walk from Archway station and your warm-up.
- **Lifting straps or chalk** if you are more advanced and working on heavier pulling.
- **Plasters** for the odd blister from grips.
- **Any medication or inhaler** you rely on, as a sensible precaution.
## What you do not need to pack
There is no need to overload your bag:
- **Protein powder and shaker.** At Dowe Dynamics you can buy whey protein at the front desk, either by the tub or as a fresh shake after your session. Flavours include chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, banana, cookies & cream and salted caramel.
- **Pre-workout.** Also available at the front desk if you use it.
- **Loads of gadgets.** A heart-rate strap, resistance bands and a foam roller are all optional extras rather than essentials.
## How to pack your bag the night before
Habits stick when they are easy. A quick routine helps:
1. Empty the bag after each session and put kit in the wash.
2. Refill your water bottle and put it in the fridge.
3. Repack clean kit, towel and your notebook.
4. Leave the bag by the door with your keys.
If the bag is ready, there is one less excuse not to go. Plenty of members from Highgate, Holloway and Kentish Town drop in on the way to or from work, and a pre-packed bag is what makes that work.
## A note on your training notebook
Of everything on this list of what to bring to the gym, the logbook pays you back the most. When you can see that your chest press has gone up from 30kg to 40kg over a couple of months, you know the training is working. It also means a coach can look at your notes and spot where to push.
## FAQs
### What should a beginner bring to the gym?
Water, a towel, comfortable kit, a way to log your sets and something to secure your valuables. That covers the first visit comfortably.
### Do I need to bring a towel to the gym?
It is good practice. A towel keeps benches and seats clean and is handy for wiping down equipment after use.
### Should I eat before going to the gym?
Many people find a light snack an hour or two before training helps. Keep something small in your bag in case you are heading in straight from work.
### Can I buy protein at the gym?
At Dowe Dynamics, yes. Whey protein and pre-workout are available at the front desk, including fresh shakes after your session.
