10 Questions to Ask Before Joining a Gym
Signing up for a gym membership usually takes five minutes. Getting out of the wrong one can take months. Whether you are joining your first gym or switching after a bad experience, a few direct questions before you sign can save you money, time and a lot of frustration. Here are the ten we think everyone should ask, along with our own answers at Dowe Dynamics in Archway, so you can see what straightforward answers look like.
Why asking first matters
Most gym complaints come down to things that could have been checked in advance: a contract longer than expected, a floor too busy to train on, or fees that did not appear on the poster. None of these are hard to ask about. People just feel awkward doing it. Do not. A good gym will be happy to answer.
10 questions to ask before you sign a gym membership
1. How long is the minimum contract?
Some memberships lock you in for a year. Others are rolling from day one. Know exactly how long you are committing to.
At Dowe Dynamics: a 2-month minimum, then flexible rolling.
2. Is there a joining fee, and what else will I pay?
Ask for the full cost, including joining, admin or card fees, and whether the price can change.
At Dowe Dynamics: Elite Membership is £45 a month plus a £10 joining fee.
3. How do I cancel?
Find out how much notice you need to give and how cancellation works. Get it in writing if you can.
At Dowe Dynamics: after the 2-month minimum, membership is flexible rolling. Ask the team for the details when you join.
4. How busy is it at the times I will train?
This is the question people forget most. Visit at your actual training time, not mid-afternoon on a quiet day.
At Dowe Dynamics: memberships are deliberately capped, so the floor is never crowded. No queues, no waiting.
5. What are the opening hours?
Make sure they fit your week, including weekends.
At Dowe Dynamics: Mon-Fri 7:00am-9:00pm, Sat-Sun 10:00am-4:00pm.
6. What equipment is there, and does it suit how I train?
A huge floor is not much use if it lacks the kit you need. Check for the machines and areas you will actually use.
At Dowe Dynamics: 44+ custom-built and classic Olymp machines, including the Olymp lat pulldown, chest press, preacher curl and leg extension, a horizontal leg press, tricep dip machine, seated lever row, standing leg curl, lever power station and adjustable ab bench.
7. Is coaching available, and who are the coaches?
Ask about their experience and what they specialise in, not just whether personal training exists.
At Dowe Dynamics: 1-2-1 coaching with Ian Dowe (founder, 50+ years), Alberto (body transformation and boxing, 20+ years) and Artem (body transformation and mindset, 10+ years).
8. Can I try it before I join?
A trial tells you more than any brochure.
At Dowe Dynamics: yes. Book a free trial, the team calls to confirm a time, you train on the machines and get a complimentary session with a coach. No pressure, no hard sell.
9. What extras are there?
Some people value recovery services, supplements or nutrition support on site.
At Dowe Dynamics: sports massage from Treatments 4 You inside the gym, plus pre-workout and whey protein at the front desk.
10. How easy is it to get to?
The best gym in London is useless if it takes an hour to reach. Think about your route from home and work.
At Dowe Dynamics: 2-4 Navigator Square, N19 3UB, right by Archway station on the Northern line. Easy to reach from Highgate, Holloway, Tufnell Park, Crouch End, Kentish Town and Islington.
Red flags to watch for
While you are asking, keep an eye out for:
- Pressure to sign on the spot
- Vague answers about fees or cancellation
- Reluctance to let you visit at peak times
- No clear information about who the coaches are
A confident gym does not need to rush you.
Making your decision
Once you have your answers, compare them against what you actually need. If you are torn between two very different types of gym, our post on why the cheapest membership can cost you more looks at how to judge real value. Full details of our Elite Membership are on the membership page.
FAQs
What should I look for in a gym membership contract?
Check the minimum term, cancellation notice, joining fee and any other charges. Make sure you understand how and when the price could change.
Is it better to have a rolling gym membership?
Rolling terms give you flexibility, which many people prefer. Some gyms, like ours, have a short minimum term before switching to rolling.
Should I visit a gym before joining?
Yes, ideally at the time of day you plan to train. That is the only way to see how busy it really is.
Do gyms let you try before you join?
Many do. At Dowe Dynamics the free trial includes training on the machines and a complimentary session with a coach.
