Gym Near Holloway: Old-School Training Just Up the Road

October 06, 2026•4 min read

Holloway Road has a bit of everything: shops, takeaways, music venues and a steady stream of buses heading north. What it does not always have is the kind of gym where serious lifters feel at home. If you are looking for a gym in Holloway that is built around proper machines rather than gimmicks, the answer is just up the road. Dowe Dynamics sits at the top of Holloway Road in Archway, a short bus ride or a decent walk away.

Getting to Archway from Holloway

Holloway Road runs straight up to Archway, which makes the journey about as simple as it gets. The gym is at 2-4 Navigator Square, N19 3UB, right by Archway station.

By bus

Plenty of buses run up and down Holloway Road towards Archway. Jump on heading north and get off at Archway. It is a quick hop, and the gym is a short walk from the stops around the station.

On foot

If you live around Holloway Road, Upper Holloway or the Nag’s Head end, walking is a realistic option. Head north up Holloway Road and keep going until you reach Archway. Many people use the walk as a warm-up, and the walk home as a cool-down.

By tube

If you are closer to Holloway Road station on the Piccadilly line, the bus or walk will usually be quicker than changing lines. If you are nearer the Northern line, Archway station puts you right at our door.

What makes this gym near Holloway different

There are lots of places to work out in this part of North London. We are not trying to be all of them. Here is what sets an old-school gym apart.

Built by a bodybuilder, not a brand

Ian Dowe, a world champion bodybuilder with more than 50 years of experience, opened Dowe Dynamics in 1994. More than three decades later, the gym still reflects that background. The walls are lined with Mr Universe posters and signed photos of golden-era legends. You can read more about Ian Dowe’s bodybuilding career on his own site.

Machines that make you work

The floor has more than 44 custom-built and classic Olymp machines. That gives you options for every body part, for example:

  • Back: Olymp lat pulldown, seated lever row
  • Chest and arms: Olymp chest press, tricep dip machine, Olymp preacher curl
  • Legs: horizontal leg press, Olymp leg extension, standing leg curl
  • Everything else: lever power station (multi), adjustable ab bench

Machines like these are ideal for building muscle because they let you focus on the target muscle and push hard without worrying about balance.

A floor you can actually use

Memberships are deliberately capped, so the gym never gets packed. That means no queues and no waiting, even during the after-work rush. Your 45-minute plan stays a 45-minute session.

No distractions

No neon, no smoothie bar, no gimmicks. Chrome, steel and Olymp iron. People come to train, and the atmosphere reflects that.

A simple weekly plan for Holloway commuters

If you work in town and live off Holloway Road, here is one way to fit three sessions into a normal week using our hours (Mon-Fri 7:00am-9:00pm, Sat-Sun 10:00am-4:00pm):

  1. Monday evening: upper body push. Chest press, tricep dips, shoulder work on the multi station.
  2. Wednesday evening: lower body. Leg press, leg extension, standing leg curl, abs.
  3. Saturday morning: upper body pull. Lat pulldown, seated row, preacher curl.

It is simple, it covers everything, and it leaves plenty of recovery time between sessions. If you want help putting a programme together, our coaches offer 1-2-1 personal training.

Extras under one roof

  • Sports massage inside the gym through Treatments 4 You, including deep tissue and cupping and mobilisation sessions.
  • Supplements at the front desk, including pre-workout and whey protein, with fresh shakes available after your session.

Membership and price

The Elite Membership is £45 a month plus a £10 joining fee. After a 2-month minimum, it moves onto a flexible rolling basis. Full details are on the membership page. Because spaces are limited, it is a good idea to book a trial early.
